Air
Miles for Alaskan Missionaries
Following is a message from David George, the newly appointed
Associational Director of Missions/Church Starter Strategist for the Chugach
Baptist Association.
Pastors and Bible study leaders live in isolation from the metropolitan,
road-serviced communities in Alaska. These areas can only be reached by air
travel. Because of the high cost of travel (average $800 per round trip),
mission and church leaders along with the Associational Director of Missions
cannot conduct necessary travel to and from these isolated villages to
provide support and encouragement to leaders and laymen, training in many
appropriate and effective areas, conduct spiritual gift inventories, do
needs assessment, promote potential new works, carry needed supplies, and
conduct important and needed regional conferences. Some of these village
ministries have no trained leader except for laypeople.
Donating airmiles, coupons, travel passes, buddy passes, companion fares,
etc. would enable the Director of Missions and these leaders to travel as
needed and would be a great way for others with extra air miles and coupons
to donate and meet this huge need without cash expenditures.
If you or someone you know might be willing to donate some airmiles,
buddy passes, etc. please contact David George at doc_pastor@yahoo.com or
907-334-8025.
Mission
Trips for 2007 UPDATED
This year a member who is attending a Christian College
went to the Philippines with her class on a mission trip over Spring
Break. We had two members chosen to tour with the Continentals in the
east, and a mission team of about 20 made a May return trip to the Philippines where our
Filipino Fellowship built a church. Another member spent two months
in Tanzania, Africa to
help out David and Dorothy Miller, our missionaries there. David and
Dorothy are now on stateside assignment, till the end of the school year
in spring 2008, to avoid disruption in their daughter's education. They
were able to spend some time in Fairbanks and Anchorage, where they had
lots of speaking engagements. In turn, the Campers on Mission came to
our church to remodel the area behind our baptistery, and build two
dressing rooms. With a few other more minor projects, we kept them busy
here about 10 days. The same month, we helped feed a group of World
Changers who were insulating and "Tyveking" a home near the church.
Mission
Offering Collected in September
March 17, 2007 marked the death of Alaska Native
Missionary Valeria Sherard, for which
the annual state missions offering is named. The link will take you to
more information on her. September is the month we collect for the
Valeria Sherard State Missions Offering.
2004 Mission Trips
Summer missions consumed our attention in 2004. Three
went to Far East Russia to build a house for the missionaries, the
Covingtons. One youth went to Guatamalla, and another member went to
Venezuela. A total of three mission work teams came to UBC - one for
construction projects, one for construction and VBS, and one to help
with the Summer Son Celebration in June. This does not count a
music/drama team that came to help Baptist Campus Ministries. This
winter, we hosted over 60 youth attending the Winter Youth
Celebration in Fairbanks.
Two Trips to Africa in 2003
We had two members traveling to Africa. A gentleman who has volunteered many times before
went with
our pastor's son to Brakenhurst. They were gone about 6 weeks. They
planned to do whatever needed doing which they expected to be, at least in
part, electrical work. They returned safely.
In July, a group of women from
our Women's Missionary Union made plans to travel to Dar el Saleem for some big
meeting the missionaries were having there.
They were to be gone about 10-14 days, and while in Africa would have mainly been doing VBS
and other things with the children of the missionaries, while the missionaries
attended the meetings. However, the danger threat rose so high in the area where
they were headed, that airlines were canceling their flights and the trip had
to be dropped.
Other Missions of
University Baptist Church
- Chinese Mission
- The Chinese Mission meets every Sunday in small groups in private homes, and every Friday for Bible Study,
worship, fellowship, and a potluck. They usually meet in Memory Hall at University Baptist Church.
Our pastor, Gary Cox, preaches for the Mission on the first and third Fridays
of each month.
- Mission to Tanzania
- Our church has maintained a missions ministry in Kigoma, Tanzania for the last
23 years, since 1983. UBC has helped build a Baptist hospital in Kigoma and continues to
send volunteers to help there. We also support the Rorabaugh's ministry to
the Barabaig, also in Tanzania.
- Here we are posting letters from our own missionaries to Tanzania, as they are
received.
- Mission to Far East Russia
- In earlier years, we had an active missions ministry in Khabarovsk, Russia.
