UBC ministers to the community on Tuesday nights (Sept. - May) at 7:00
p.m. by providing:
English as a Second Language Classes
Citizenship Classes
Tutoring in T.O.E.F.L., the test required of non-native speakers to
attend the University of Alaska.
The literacy classes at University Baptist Church are subsidized by
the church, so students are only required to pay a $15 charge for
materials (a bit more for T.O.E.F.L.) Childcare and snacks are provided. Students learning English as a second language come from many
different countries. For example, students in the 1999-2009 classes came from the
following countries:
Cambodia
Vietnam
Japan
China
Korea
Russia
Czechoslovakia
and many others
They attend class from 7 to 9 p.m., with a 20 minute snack break
at 8 p.m. Churches in the area take turns providing refreshments
throughout the school year. Students also have a chance to practice
their English skills at a Christmas party (pot luck with emphasis on
ethnic foods from their own countries) and an End of School Party in
May. The school observes Spring Break in March, and Summer vacation.
