Chinese Mission
Chinese worship services in Fairbanks, Alaska? Who are those people downstairs in Memory hall and
Youth Room on Sunday Night?
We are glad you asked! They are the Chinese Christian
Fellowship of University Baptist Church. In 2001, they became a mission of
University Baptist Church. Every Sunday night at 7 p.m. the Chinese met to
sing, study, worship and fellowship. They heard the Gospel presented and took the
opportunity to ask many questions.
While the adults study in Memory Hall, the children learned, too.
This has been an on-going ministry here at UBC since
1993. It's vital to the Chinese community. In the past, Nancy Baldwin
gave leadership to the
fellowship with the help of a Chinese Leadership Team. A long-time Chinese resident of
Fairbanks is the worship leader. Judy Zach plays the piano, and Pastor Cox
preaches twice a month.
Many volunteers have come to help through the years.
Grace Chinese Baptist church in San Jose, California has been very supportive. Special
emphases like revivals, lecture series, camps and visitation campaigns have resulted in
professions of faith every year.
In late 2001, the mission took a new direction, to better meet the needs
of the Chinese members. They began meeting for Bible study and worship (as well
as fellowship and a potluck) every Friday night. Pastor Gary preaches with
an interpreter occasionally, but most of the sermons were brought by Tony
Liu, our Chinese Interim Pastor while he was here. The Sunday night meetings
were reserved for discipleship training.
Another change took place in March of 2007, when the discipleship
training on Sunday nights switched to small group meetings on Sunday
afternoons. These are held in private homes of the Chinese congregation.
More and more of the Chinese congregation have also been attending Pastor
Gary's Discovery Classes which are taught
in English and involve many others in the church.
Many Chinese students hear the Gospel for the first time
at the fellowship. Pray for those who work with this fellowship, as they remain faithful. If
God is leading you to be a part, call the church at 479-2440.

The Chinese Mission has small group fellowship every Sunday
afternoon (around 4 p. m.) and potluck fellowship and worship services every Friday night a 7
p.m. in Memory Hall at University Baptist Church, 1197 University Avenue,
Fairbanks, Alaska 99709. For December only, they will be meeting in Memory
Hall as we wait for our new piano. Telephone: 479-2442
